Vietnam has certainly come a long way since the war that had immortalized it in the minds and hearts of the world as a country torn by unrest. Evidently, things had quieted down and things have progressed quite nicely. In fact, Vietnam is currently regarded as one of the more successful nations in the world in terms of its economic development within the last decade. Not only has it established relations with many countries all over the globe, it has also made quite a name for itself as one of the more enjoyable casual destinations in that part of Asia. Also included in the progress of Vietnam would be the emergence of pizza.
Pizza here in Vietnam may seem to puzzle most people, since the Vietnamese are considered to be rice eaters, but the fact of the matter is that there are already a number of pizza restaurants here in this country that are enjoying a considerable amount of success. This includes some international pizza chains of course (Pizza Hut is one of the favorites), and some pizza establishments that can be considered as true-blue Vietnam pizza places. Of course, it must be said that Vietnam can claim to have the best pizza in the whole wide world – Vietnam pizzas are yet to be perfected and the debate on the source of the greatest pizzas in the world still rages on – but there are still many good pizza restaurants scattered all over Vietnam (the best places to look are Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi).
Having pizza in Vietnam is hardly different from anywhere else in the world – that is to say, many of the pizza restaurants in Vietnam not only have walk-in restaurants, but also have delivery services for the convenience of their customers. The variety of pizza in Vietnam is also considerably wide – there are pan pizzas and thin crust pizzas. There are standard pizzas and special “designer pizzas”. There are pizzas served in restaurants and pizzas sold in stalls. Eating pizza in Vietnam, evidently, has become part of the social consciousness.
Foreigners who have just moved to Vietnam, however, are warned that the pizza that is being served in pizza restaurants in this country may not be suited to their tastes; here, certain flavors are favored and, more often than not, these flavors are kept on the regular menu. They are not necessarily palatable for people who are used to pizza served in other countries – as is the case in many other countries. Visitors are also warned that pizzas in Vietnam are typically more adventurous in terms of toppings, and more often than not, a person is likely to find topping combinations that he or she has never considered before.
Still, this does not mean that eating pizza in Vietnam is not a worthwhile endeavor. While it is true that they cannot compete with other pizzas with international acclaim, the pizza served in Vietnam still provide us with some of the most interesting and inventive approaches to the dish – quite comforting and fun at the same time.
